Eastern Black Swallowtail Life Cycle

Eastern Black Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) Habitat and Habits The Black Swallowtail, one of North America’s most common butterflies, frequently visits backyard gardens. Nicknamed parsley worms, the caterpillars feed on parsley, dill, fennel, and other members of the carrot family. The black swallowtail is found throughout southern Canada, most of the eastern and mid-western United States west to the Rocky Mountains, and southwest into Arizona and northern Mexico. It is rare in the Florida Keys, apparently due to the absence of its carrot family (Apiaceae) hosts (Minno & Emmel 1993). Black Swallowtails (Papilio polyxenes) overwinter in their pupal stage, and emerge as adult butterflies when spring arrives. I’ve searched the garden fence and nearby shrubs, hoping to find a new chrysalis, without success. The Black Swallowtail is well-camouflaged in its brown pupal case. I don’t expect to see it again until the warm weather returns. Wingspan 3.1 to 4.3 in Eastern Black Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus)
